Whether you’re saving for a child’s education, a house down payment, retirement, or any other financial goal, the question is usually the same: how much do I need to invest every month to get there? The Mutual Fund Goal Calculator works backward from your target amount to tell you exactly that.

Simply enter the goal amount you want to reach, your expected annual return rate, and the number of years you have to reach it. The calculator instantly shows the monthly SIP amount required, your total investment over the period, and how much of the final goal comes purely from investment growth (wealth gained).

Mutual Fund Goal Calculator Formula

This calculator rearranges the standard SIP future value formula to solve for the monthly investment (P) instead of the final value (M):

Required Monthly SIP = Goal Amount / { [ ( (1 + i)^n − 1 ) / i ] × (1 + i) }

Where:

  • Goal Amount = The target corpus you want to reach
  • i = Expected monthly rate of return (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
  • n = Total number of months you plan to invest (years × 12)

Once the required monthly SIP is known, the total investment over the period and the wealth gained purely from returns are calculated as:

Total Investment = Required Monthly SIP × n

Wealth Gained = Goal Amount − Total Investment

Example Calculation

Suppose you want to build a corpus of ₹50,00,000 in 15 years, assuming an expected annual return of 12%.

  • Goal Amount: ₹50,00,000
  • Expected Annual Return: 12% (Monthly rate i = 1%)
  • Time Period: 15 years (n = 180 months)

Using the formula:

Required Monthly SIP = 50,00,000 / { [ (1.01^180 − 1) / 0.01 ] × 1.01 } ≈ ₹9,909

TypeDetails
Required Monthly SIP≈ ₹9,909
Total Investment over 15 years≈ ₹17,83,676
Wealth Gained (from returns)≈ ₹32,16,324

So investing approximately ₹9,909 every month for 15 years, at an expected 12% annual return, could grow into your ₹50,00,000 goal — with roughly ₹32,16,324 of that final amount coming purely from investment growth rather than your own contributions, which together add up to about ₹17,83,676.

FAQs about Mutual Fund Goal Calculator

What is a Mutual Fund Goal Calculator?

A Mutual Fund Goal Calculator tells you how much you need to invest every month via SIP to reach a specific target amount within a chosen time period, based on an expected annual rate of return. It works backward from your goal, unlike a regular SIP calculator which projects forward from a fixed monthly amount.

How accurate is the required SIP amount shown?

The figure is only as accurate as the expected return rate you enter. Since mutual fund returns are market-linked and not guaranteed, actual results can vary — using a realistic, moderately conservative return assumption gives a more dependable required SIP figure than an optimistic one.

What happens if I can’t afford the required monthly SIP shown?

You have a few options: extend your time period if your goal has flexibility, adjust your goal amount to a more achievable figure, or consider whether a higher-return (and typically higher-risk) fund category fits your risk appetite, which would lower the required monthly SIP for the same goal and timeframe.

Should I increase my SIP amount over time instead of keeping it fixed?

Many investors do, using a Step-Up SIP that increases the investment amount periodically (often annually) in line with rising income. This can help reach the same goal with a lower starting SIP amount than the fixed monthly figure this calculator shows.

Does this calculator account for inflation in my goal amount?

No, you need to enter the goal amount in today’s terms or adjust it yourself for expected inflation before using the calculator. For a goal far in the future, such as retirement or a child’s higher education, it’s advisable to first inflate today’s cost to its likely future value, and use that inflated figure as your Goal Amount here.
