There are two common ways to invest in a mutual fund: a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP), where you invest a fixed amount every month, or a Lumpsum investment, where you invest the entire amount in one go. Our Mutual Fund Investment Calculator lets you switch between both modes in a single tool, so you don’t need separate calculators depending on how you plan to invest.

Select SIP or Lumpsum using the toggle, then enter your investment amount, expected annual return rate, and time period. The calculator instantly shows your invested amount, estimated returns, and total value based on the mode you selected.

Mutual Fund Investment Calculator Formula

The calculator uses a different formula depending on the selected mode.

SIP Mode Formula

M = P × [ ( (1 + i)^n − 1 ) / i ] × (1 + i)

  • M = Maturity amount at the end of the investment period
  • P = Monthly investment amount
  • i = Expected monthly rate of return (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
  • n = Total number of monthly installments (years × 12)

Lumpsum Mode Formula

M = P × (1 + r)^t

  • M = Maturity amount at the end of the investment period
  • P = One-time investment amount
  • r = Expected annual rate of return (as a decimal)
  • t = Investment period in years

In both modes, Estimated Returns is simply the Total Value minus the amount you actually invested.

Example Calculation

Here’s how the same 12% expected annual return and 10-year period play out differently under each mode:

MetricSIP ModeLumpsum Mode
Investment Input₹5,000/month₹1,00,000 one-time
Invested Amount₹6,00,000₹1,00,000
Est. Returns₹5,61,695₹2,10,585
Total Value₹11,61,695₹3,10,585

In SIP mode, investing ₹5,000 every month for 10 years at an expected 12% annual return grows to approximately ₹11,61,695, with ₹6,00,000 of that being your own contributions. In Lumpsum mode, a one-time investment of ₹1,00,000 at the same 12% rate over the same 10 years grows to approximately ₹3,10,585. The two aren’t directly comparable since they involve very different amounts of money invested — each mode is meant to be used independently based on how you actually plan to invest.

FAQs about Mutual Fund Investment Calculator

What is the difference between SIP mode and Lumpsum mode in this calculator?

SIP mode calculates returns for a fixed amount invested every month over your chosen period, using the SIP future value formula. Lumpsum mode calculates returns for a single one-time investment made at the start, using standard compound interest. Switching modes changes both the input field and the underlying formula used.

Which mode should I use if I plan to invest both a lump sum and monthly SIP in the same fund?

This calculator handles one mode at a time. If you’re combining both approaches — for example, an initial lump sum plus ongoing monthly SIPs — calculate each portion separately (once in SIP mode and once in Lumpsum mode) and add the two resulting totals together for a combined estimate.

Are the returns shown by this calculator guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund returns are market-linked and not guaranteed in either mode. This calculator uses the expected annual return rate you enter to project an estimate — actual returns can be higher or lower depending on how the fund performs.

Does the SIP formula assume investments happen at the start or end of each month?

This calculator’s SIP formula assumes each monthly investment is made at the start of the month and compounds for that full month, which is the standard convention used by most SIP calculators and matches how most fund houses illustrate SIP growth.

Is this Mutual Fund Investment Calculator free to use?

Yes, this calculator is completely free to use, requires no sign-up, and you can switch between SIP and Lumpsum modes as many times as you like to compare different investment scenarios.
