ELSS Tax Saving Calculator – ELSS vs Tax-Saver FD

ELSS Tax Saving Calculator

Both ELSS and a traditional 80C option (like a Tax-Saver FD) give you the same upfront tax deduction on the same invested amount. This calculator shows that shared tax saving, plus how the two options compare at maturity.

When choosing where to invest for your Section 80C tax deduction, ELSS is often compared against a traditional option like a 5-Year Tax-Saver Fixed Deposit. Here’s the key insight this calculator is built around: for the same amount invested (up to the ₹1,50,000 annual 80C limit), the tax you save is identical regardless of which instrument you choose — the difference between ELSS and a Tax-Saver FD isn’t in the tax saved, it’s in how much each option grows to by maturity.

Enter your annual 80C investment amount, the expected return for ELSS, the Tax-Saver FD’s interest rate, your time period, and your income tax slab rate. The calculator shows your shared tax saving, then compares the maturity value of both options side by side.

ELSS Tax Saving Calculator Formula

Tax saved is calculated the same way for both options, since Section 80C doesn’t distinguish between instruments:

Tax Saved Per Year = MIN( Annual Investment , ₹1,50,000 ) × Income Tax Slab Rate

The maturity value of each option is calculated using the future value of an annuity formula (annual contributions, compounding once a year), using each option’s own return rate:

Maturity Value = Annual Investment × [ ( (1 + r)^n − 1 ) / r ] × (1 + r)

  • r = ELSS’s expected annual return, or the Tax-Saver FD’s fixed annual interest rate
  • n = Number of years you invest

Whichever option produces the higher Maturity Value is the one that builds more wealth over the period — even though both delivered the exact same tax saving along the way.

Example Calculation

Suppose you invest the full ₹1,50,000 every year for 5 years (the standard Tax-Saver FD lock-in), comparing ELSS at an expected 12% annual return against a Tax-Saver FD at 6.5%, and you’re in the 30% tax slab.

  • Annual 80C Investment: ₹1,50,000
  • ELSS Expected Return: 12% | Tax-Saver FD Rate: 6.5%
  • Time Period: 5 years
  • Income Tax Slab Rate: 30%

Tax Saved Per Year: ₹45,000 | Total Tax Saved over 5 years: ₹2,25,000 — identical either way.

MetricELSSTax-Saver FD
Total Invested₹7,50,000₹7,50,000
Wealth Gained₹3,17,278₹1,59,559
Maturity Value₹10,67,278₹9,09,559

Both options save you exactly the same ₹2,25,000 in tax over the 5 years. But at maturity, ELSS is ahead by approximately ₹1,57,719 — purely due to its higher expected return. This gap comes with a trade-off: the FD’s 6.5% is fixed and guaranteed, while ELSS’s 12% is a market-linked assumption that isn’t guaranteed and could turn out higher or lower in reality.

FAQs about ELSS Tax Saving Calculator

Does ELSS save more tax than a Tax-Saver FD?

No. Both give you the identical Section 80C deduction for the same amount invested, up to ₹1,50,000 per year. The tax saved depends only on how much you invest and your tax slab, not on which 80C instrument you choose.

So why would I choose ELSS over a Tax-Saver FD?

Because ELSS, being an equity fund, has historically offered higher long-term growth potential than a fixed-rate FD, and it also has a shorter lock-in (3 years vs 5 years for a Tax-Saver FD). The trade-off is that ELSS returns are market-linked and not guaranteed, while an FD’s rate is fixed and known in advance.

Is Tax-Saver FD interest taxable?

Yes. Unlike ELSS (where gains are taxed as equity LTCG at 12.5% above ₹1,25,000 only when you redeem), Tax-Saver FD interest is fully taxable at your income tax slab rate every year it’s earned, which further reduces its effective post-tax return compared to what this calculator shows on a pre-tax basis.

Is this calculator accounting for the FD’s annual interest tax?

No, the Tax-Saver FD’s Maturity Value shown here is on a pre-tax basis. Since FD interest is taxed annually at your slab rate, the actual post-tax FD maturity value would be lower than shown, which would make ELSS’s advantage in the comparison even larger for someone in a higher tax bracket.

What other options count toward the ₹1,50,000 Section 80C limit?

Besides ELSS and Tax-Saver FDs, common Section 80C investments include PPF, EPF/VPF contributions, NSC, life insurance premiums, and principal repayment on a home loan. The ₹1,50,000 limit is shared across all of these combined, not given separately to each.
